Sit as the dew,                                      lapping at grasses’ lips,

Sit as the sun,                                       rising from her jagged bed,

White sheets,                                       grey mattress.

Sit as silence,                                        louder than the night before.

Sit as air,                                              awaiting instruction.

How to blow, to flow,                          fill lungs but to breathe.

Minute hand stuck,                              seconds whir,

Pulse in sync,                                       sixty beats per minute.

Naked,                                                 while hours stay stagnant.

Awake only with,                                 a bug on the windowsill,

Flying away,                                         tearing at the shoulder blade,

Sprout wings,                                       never growing.

Reach for phone,                                 fingers finding another,

Textbook,                                            teaching to read,

Read transcripts,                                  of the moon’s last shift.

Birdsong chirps,                                   spilling oil,

Morning canvas,                                  blank,

last portrait discarded,                          hair new length.

Taking brush,                                       from beaks before.
